DENTON -- The North Texas softball team continues their six-game home stand this weekend with a three-game series against the Texas-El Paso Miners.
UTEP comes into the series with a 7-16 record and winners of their last two games. The Miners defeated Charlotte two games out of three to open conference play with a series victory last weekend.
Kacey Duffield leads a solid UTEP lineup with a .441 batting average and has hit a team-high six home runs. Kasey Flores is also a vital part of the Miners' offense, batting .369 and leading the team with 19 RBIs.
However, the team from west Texas has struggled on the mound this season. Their pitchers come into the series averaging an 8.08 ERA, and Julia Wright -- their No. 1 pitcher -- has a 6.50 ERA and 5-5 record.
This being said, I believe Katie Clark, Lacy Gregory, Harley Perella and the rest of the Mean Green offense are set to have a feast this weekend.
North Texas (13-9, 2-1 C-USA) is coming off a series victory against a solid Southern Miss team who will probably place in the top 3 of Conference USA. During the two Saturday wins, the Mean Green collected 11 wins and 16 hits against the Golden Eagle pitching staff.
Both teams will be heading into Saturday's games with six days rest after UNT's game against Wichita State was cancelled due to high winds in Kansas earlier this week. It will be interesting to see which team comes out with energy and finds a way to strike first after almost a week of no games.
North Texas is 8-1 when scoring first this season, so if the Mean Green get off to a good start in every game, I believe they will add three more wins to their 2019 resume.
First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's afternoon game will be at noon.
