COLLEGE STATION -- It's early, but is UNT softball the sleeper team throughout the entire athletic program? Whether they are or not, the Mean Green softball team is poised for an exciting year.
Last season, the Mean Green softball team finished 25-27 under former coach Tracey Kee, who resigned at the end of the year. In June, Rodney DeLong was named the head coach.
DeLong and his staff have managed to instill energy and excitement to create a culture where every player believes this Mean Green program can beat any team in the nation.
Once again, it's early, but the Mean Green pulled off one of the most impressive wins in program history on Saturday afternoon. North Texas defeated No. 20 Texas A&M 10-2 at Davis Diamond in College Station. Anytime a team can run rule a top-20 team on the road, they can play.
"We played really well," DeLong said. "We had some big hits in some big moments and played great defense. If we perform at that level more often than not, then we're going to be very successful. I'm very proud of them."
DeLong also said he was not surprised at how the Mean Green performed against the Aggies on Saturday and said North Texas "still has a long way to go."
"I still think we're going to play a lot better softball this year," DeLong said.
North Texas scored all of their runs in the second and third innings. The Mean Green scored 4 runs in the second inning before erupting for another 6 runs in the third to put away the Aggies.
Hanna Rebar and Harley Perella teamed up to drive in 7 runs for North Texas.
Georgia Tech transfer Jenna Goodrich grabbed the win against Texas A&M after allowing no runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Hope Trautwein relieved Goodrich to finish off a monumental win for the Mean Green.
North Texas finished 3-1 in the Texas A&M Tournament after a loss to California Baptist in their final game of the tournament. The Mean Green resume play with the Mean Green Classic at Lovelace Stadium this Friday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
